AS Gold Coast City is lagging in the vaccination race would it not be better for the Mayor, rather than criticising the border opening plan we have all looked forward to, to use his extensive publicity team to help him message out that vaccination now is the key to freedom and business sustainability?

After all, the Mayor identifies with the LNP and they were late in providing vaccinations, particularly in Queensland, where there was a waiting list.

So doesn’t he have a responsibility to urge community to take advantage of the variety of vaccinations that are now freely available, rather than use up media space regarding his thoughts on the state plan?

Especially as the plan is guided by epidemiological advice, which as a local representative he is not a party to but which same advice has given Queensland freedoms not enjoyed by our fellow Australians?

Surely what may imperil this open state for business and residents is the still unvaccinated spreaders weighing down the hospital system and potentially losing us our safe state good name re health. Shouldn’t urging laggers to vaccinate be where the Mayor should put his energy? SALLY SPAIN, OXENFORD

REFERRING to “no name” in Chatroom (19/10) saying that greed etc must be stopped to replace fossil fuels with nonpolluting renewables and achieve zero-carbon emissions is probably supported by most of the population. However, I disagree with him/her that nuclear energy should not be considered because of noxious by-products.

Nuclear power plants do not produce CO2 and the spent fuel rods can be recycled or safely disposed of (possibly at the bottom of old coal mines).

Solar and wind power generators don’t produce CO2 either but their components do wear out too and cannot be recycled.

Compared to nuclear waste, the amount of space taken up by worn out batteries, solar panels and propellers would be far greater than spent fuel rods.

Lastly, the country has abundant uranium deposits and can become self-sufficient in reliable nuclear power generation while it has to import all of the wind and solar equipment and is climate dependant.

THE media seems to be obsessed about the Nats and the Liberals concerning Glasgow, they want the nationals to blindly agree to zero emissions.

By 2050, the question we should ask is, how do they intend to get there and at what cost?

So please you people in the media ask the right questions, ask the right people and tell us, the ones that are going to be affected. ROD WATSON, SURFERS PARADISE
