Neo-Nazi in system for state

- ANTHONY DOWSLEY MARK BUTTLER

A NEO-Nazi was helping update the Victorian government’s computer systems before his affiliations were revealed.

News Corp can reveal IT guru and Nazi sympathiser Tyrel Cameron worked for a consultant to the Department of Premier and Cabinet until last November.

But it was unknown to the government or the tech company he represented that Mr Cameron was a core member of Australia’s largest white supremacist group, the National Socialists Network.

A digital audit was ordered after his ultra right-wing affiliation was exposed. But the government did not ask Victoria Police to investigate.

A DPC spokeswoman said Mr Cameron did not work on sensitive files or have access to personal data.

“The department is aware an IT consultant with alleged far-right political affiliations was formerly employed by a company contracted to provide services,” she said.

“While the contractor’s alleged political affiliations are of grave concern, the department has found no evidence of unlawful or malicious behaviour.”

Mr Cameron’s membership of the NSN was unveiled by a 60 Minutes investigation in August. It is understood he cleared a police check.
