A VAMPIRE WALKS INTO A GOLD COAST BLOOD BANK ...

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

THE “vampire” population is calling on the city to fight a major shortage in blood donations.

Ironic, isn’t it, but don’t be alarmed. Dracula’s cabaret star Mick Jeffery has just marked his 79th blood donation, as health workers reveal there are almost 700 donation slots empty over coming months.

Mr Jeffery, who plays a lead role in the popular venue’s new show, told the Bulletin: “I’ve always tried to do it as often as I could. I’ve had friends and family who’ve needed ongoing support through donations.

“Working at Dracula’s, the irony doesn’t escape me, a vampire giving blood back to the community.

“But hopefully it inspires more people to donate. It’s really not a scary process, all the staff are lovely.”

Staff at Robina’s Australian Red Cross Lifeblood said they had seen a major drop-off in donations since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manager Kristy Purnell said people working from home and the Omicron wave had also affected numbers.

“One in two people are cancelling their appointments due to not being well,” she said.
