Covid knocked Storm co-captain for six but he’s back on deck

- NICK SMART

MELBOURNE Storm co-captain Jesse Bromwich will return against the NZ Warriors on Monday night despite a case of Covid that kept him bedridden for “four or five days.”

Bromwich only got out of isolation last Thursday, when he returned to the club along with brother Kenny, who also had the virus but experienced only minor symptoms and returned on Friday.

The Melbourne forward pack leader trained at the club’s captain’s run on Gosch’s Paddock on Sunday and will take his spot in the run-on side for Storm’s biggest home game of the year on Monday night.

“They were both really different,” Storm said Craig Bellamy said of the Bromwich brothers.

“Jesse was in bed for four or five days whereas it didn’t really affect Kenny at all, so that just seems to be the way Covid is.

“He came back on Thursday and I think Kenny came back on Friday and he was straight back into it, whereas we’ve taken a little bit more time with Jess.

“But he got through pretty well today, so all is looking good there.”

Storm are full of confidence heading into their AAMI Park Anzac Day blockbuster after an impressive home win over Cronulla last week, led by Cameron Munster.

The Melbourne playmaker, who is in the sights of Wayne Bennett and the cashed-up Dolphins, was at his dazzling best against the Sharks.

Bellamy said the Storm fiveeighth was at the peak of his powers right now.

“I don’t think I’ve seen much better than last week to be quite honest, so I’d like to think he’s back to his best,” he said.

“Obviously the difficult thing now is being consistent with that.

“We all know he has the ability and the know-how and the physical attributes so it’s just a matter of being consistent now … but this is the most consistent he’s ever been.”
