PEOPLE ‘LOVE TO HATE’ OUR SUCCESS

- CRYSTAL FOX

ONE of Australia’s most powerful social media families say people “love to hate” them because of what they see online.

But it is nowhere near the full picture.

At the peak of the Covid19 pandemic in 2020, Amy and Emilee Hembrow opened beauty therapy studio “Sskin” in Bundall. Amy has 277,000 followers on Instagram; Emilee has 1.1m and another sister, Tammy, has 14.5m, one of the largest followings in Australia.

Amy said some people had underestimated their abilities in the business world because of their online personalities.

“I think people see one aspect of you on social media and they think that’s who you are,” she said.

“People love to hate. “We are just a close-knit family who support each other in business. We are mothers, we are sisters and we are daughters.

“We are trying hard to achieve our goals and we are working hard to do it.

“I don’t show when I am doing my emails and when I am in the office, which is most days. I don’t think people understand how involved we are. We try to let our work speak for itself.”

Amy said the sisters were confident Sskin would be successful because they understood their client base.

“We are a representation of the clients. During the pandemic we had to learn to pivot in a time when people in the industry were craving human contact.”

Amy said March was their most successful month in two years of operation.

“We are constantly changing and learning from what doesn’t work. I can’t say we wouldn’t do anything differently because now we have an understanding of what we want.” Among their staff is therapist Christie Cameron, who was recently voted the Gold Coast’s best skin and beauty therapist.

Amy encouraged entrepreneurs not to wait for the right time and just to “start with what you have”.

“Don’t wait for more money or the right time.

“If you’re always chipping away or doing something towards your goal of starting a business you will make it.”
