WORLD STAGE IN YOUR BACKYARD
AS a seven-year-old beginner zipping around the local bush tracks, Aaron Tanti could never have dreamt he’d be a motocross champion.
The Tanah Merah local, 25, who took the 2022 ProMX crown in August, this week took to Surfers Paradise Beach to tear up the sand in celebration of a new coup.
Gold Coaster Tony Cochrane’s events firm SX Global, which holds the rights for the World Supercross Championships has moved its HQ to the Gold Coast, bringing 51 jobs, as revealed in Thursday’s Bulletin.
“I’m super excited, it’s really good for the sport the home base here at the Gold Coast is only half an hour from me,” Mr Tanti said.
“It’s really cool for the kids growing up now, they’re just starting this championship and it’s going to grow as the years come, so for the little kids to see it on TV and know that its home base is here will really build up the sport and they can really dream about making it to that level one day.”
SX Global will be based in Chevron Island and will run up to 14 events a year after securing 10-year promotional rights, with a 10-year option, from the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme.
SX Global’s Ryan Sanderson said the move from Victoria would allow his team to live in a “holiday destination” while working.
“We couldn’t be happier about the decision,” he said.
“The Gold Coast suits our lifestyle – what better place to live than here while working the world tour?”
SX Global’s new championship will have only 10 exclusive team licenses available and is set to offer the richest prize purses in the sport’s history, with a total of $250,000 up for grabs at each event.
