ITHE QUEEN ON HER PLATINUM JUBILEE
t was a four-day extravaganza full of the pomp and pageantry that is adored by royal fans the world over. Her Majesty the Queen’s historic platinum jubilee celebrations in June 2022 honoured and celebrated her extraordinary and historical reign – the first British monarch to achieve 70 years on the throne.
Throughout Britain, street festivals and parties were held and beacons were lit in what was dubbed the nation’s biggest ever party.
And around the world, people in all the Commonwealth nations, and elsewhere, watched as the royals converged on London for the platinum jubilee’s key events – the Trooping the Colour, the service of thanksgiving, the Platinum Party at the Palace, and the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.
Ever stoic, Her Majesty, now 96 and frail, was determined to appear on the famed Buckingham Palace balcony during the Trooping the Colour parade despite her worsening mobility troubles. And, true to her character, she did not disappoint her public. It was a touching moment as she stood alongside Anne, Charles and Camilla and the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children, presenting a dazzling vision of the monarchy’s future.
Four-year-old Prince Louis of Wales went viral with his adorable antics as he covered his ears and pulled funny faces during the thundering roar of the Royal Air Force flypast. He was again the star of the show days later while struggling to watch the lengthy Platinum Jubilee Pageant, fidgeting in his seat and poking his tongue out at his mother.
Harry and Meghan kept a low profile during the festivities, but at least they were present – and there remains hope that they will somehow reconcile and rejoin the royal family.
