Bond gets revenge against UQ in final

- JORDAN HUGHES

THE Bull Sharks have cemented their standing as one of the premier women’s rugby sevens outfits in the country with a sensational performance to take out the Brisvegas 7s at the weekend.

The Bull Sharks desperately needed a top-two finish to stay in contention for the Caslick Cup after finishing third in round 1 at Bond University a fortnight ago.

Bond came out strong on day one with convincing wins over Souths and Darling Downs before meeting UQ in the final match. It went down to its varsity rivals 26-17 but had done enough to book its place in the quarter-finals.

In the quarter-final Bond met Sunnybank with Amahli Hala scoring two tries to secure the 24-7 win that sent it into a semi-final encounter with Easts Tigers.

The previous time the sides met they drew 12-all, with the Tigers going through on for and against. But this time round it was Bond which advanced to the final with a 14-12 triumph in one of the best games of sevens all season.

This set the scene for redemption against UQ in the final. The Bull Sharks were dominant from start to finish with Georgia Sim leading the way alongside the dangerous Hala, who scored three tries in the 36-7 rout.

Sim was one of Bond’s best all weekend, putting her body on the line throughout the tournament.

“I was so proud; playing with Bond is just one big family and we always play for each other so to be able to take it out shows how much this team means to all of us,” she said.

Bond finished third in the opening round and showed real character to bounce back at the weekend in a competitive field.

“We took away some good lessons from the first tournament and we came into this weekend really fired up and had finetuned what we needed and it paid off,” Sim said.

Sim, who arguably had her best tournament to date, was overjoyed to get one back over UQ and secure the win in the final.

“It was really good, in that second half when we did get up the points, we could relax a little bit and really enjoy the moment and hopefully we can continue that into next week,” she said.
