TOP GC STUDENTS HONOURED
A CROP of high-achieving students have been recognised for making their mark on the Gold Coast.
The 2022 Gold Coast Student Excellence Awards were held at a sold-out gala event aboard the YOT Club on Friday night.
Presented by Study Gold Coast, six students were recognised for their significant impact on the community from a field of 18 finalists.
Arundel international PhD student Majed Abuseif (Griffith University) took out the “excellence in protecting our environment” award for his Smart Planter Box invention.
The technology helps plants to grow in extreme environments to generate energy, harvest, recycle and store water.
Mr Abuseif’s invention has been shortlisted as one of the top 10 innovative designs worldwide for city resilience.
The Arundel student said he was “very happy” to receive the gong.
“Sometimes when you work so hard and you have so many challenges, to be complemented with such an award, it feels like your effort and hard work is appreciated,” he said.
Study Gold Coast chairman Rob Borbidge praised the awardees’ unwavering willingness to give back to the city.
“A heartfelt thank you to all Gold Coast students who have contributed to our city in one way or another. We wouldn’t be the city we are without you,” he said.
