Pacific Fair’s going green

All electricity from renewables

- SAM STOLZ

ONE of the Gold Coast’s biggest shopping centres has made a green change in a bid to see 100 per cent of its electricity sourced from renewable energy.

Pacific Fair at Broadbeach, along with Gasworks at Newstead and Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, have inked a seven-year-deal with publiclylisted company CS Energy to source the entirety of their electricity needs from renewables.

The solar and wind power will be sourced from Columboola Solar Farm in Queensland’s Western Downs region, where it will be fed into the grid and purchased by AMP Capital, who own the three centres.

Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Minister Mick de Brenni said the deal comes as “consumers are demanding action on climate”.

“Now shoppers at these Queensland icons will be able to enjoy the experience knowing they are creating a cleaner environment,” Mr de Brenni said.

“The deal is CS Energy’s first 100 per cent renewable energy contract and demonstrates the company’s clear plan to transition to renewables – including more wind, solar, and storage.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan means that we will meet and beat the State’s renewable energy targets with 10 times more renewables by 2040.”

Minister for the Environment and Great Barrier Reef and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said: “We know that fossil-fuelled electricity generation creates enormous emissions, which is why we’ve committed to converting our power stations to Clean Energy Hubs by 2035”.

“The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan is all about a future of cleaner energy for Queenslanders and will reduce household and business electricity emissions by 96 per cent by 2040,” she said.

Ms Scanlon said the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan would aid in protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

AMP Capital’s Erik Moore said the deal was ideal for the “iconic Queensland assets” and the environment.

As a result of the greener move, 61,801 tonnes of CO2-e will be avoided each year, which is equivalent to 5,374 houses brought to zero emissions, 21,496 cars taken off the road and 4,039 hectares of plantation forest retained.
