CLARKO RARING TO TAKE ROOS OUT OF THE CELLAR
CLARKO FACTOR
JUST what on-field results can we expect from the Kangaroos, given they have won just 9½ games over the past three seasons? Alastair Clarkson is one of the great coaches of the modern era, but this list is coming from a long way back. Though low external expectations means there is not a lot of pressure to turn things around quickly, Clarkson is ultra-competitive and will back himself to improve the club in short time from the outset.
YOUNG GUNS
THE loss of 2021 No.1 draft pick Jason HorneFrancis was a blow, but it allowed the Kangaroos to restock their list with high-end selections. North Melbourne added midfielder George Wardlaw and exciting forward Harry Sheezel with the second and third picks last year, while also securing Port Adelaide’s 2024 firstround call. Will Phillips, the third selection in the 2020 pool, is also primed for a key role this season after overcoming glandular fever.
THOMAS IMPACT
CAN Tarryn Thomas turn his career around? The midfielder had a poor 2022 campaign before stepping away from the club over summer due to allegations of violence against women. He is now back at the club, though unavailable for selection until he earns the trust of his teammates and coaches. Thomas has huge football talent but it remains to be seen what part he will play in North’s 2023 season.
TALL ORDER
NORTH is not short on height, but the question is which of its tall forwards and rucks can become AFL regulars? With Todd Goldstein, 34, in the twilight of his decorated career and Nick Larkey shouldering a heavy load in attack, Callum ColemanJones, Charlie Comben, Tristan Xerri and Jacob Edwards have all been staking their claims.
