John Sattler leaves a big legacy in football

-

JOHN Sattler’s reputation as a rugby league legend was forged in the wild days of the 1960s and 1970s. It was an era of tough men playing footy in a fashion which has been phased out of the modern game for a variety of reasons.

Sattler’s most famous moment, which cemented his reputation as league’s toughest man came in Souths’ 1970 grand final victory which he played all but three minutes with a broken jaw.

His death this week was not unexpected, having been afflicted for the past three years with the devastation of dementia. Questions have been raised about the toll countless head-knocks during his years on the field took on his health in later life.

While his on-field exploits are what he is best remembered for, Sattler leaves behind a profound legacy here on the Gold Coast where he lived for more than 40 years after retiring from football.

Tributes have flowed from locals for his role as a publican of some of the city’s best-known watering holes and cafes.

They remember Sattler for his friendly smile and exciting tales that he would happily share after pouring a cold beer or make a strong coffee.

Perhaps his greatest football legacy for the Gold Coast is his unsung role in bringing a national team to the city.

Sattler was part of the consortium which founded the Gold Coast Giants, later known as the Seagulls and Chargers in the late 1980s.

While the venture folded within a decade, it showed that there was an appetite for league on the Coast and that this city deserved a national team.

The Titans, entered the NRL nearly a decade later and has followed in the steps of those Sattler influenced teams to become an established part of our sporting landscape.

Is it just me ? Who cannot stomach the Drama queen commentary from the voice from hell, Dan Ginnane on NRL Foxtel, the drooled out prolonged vocals, and it’s never played, how can it get the gig over Spud Carroll, Roach and other legends of the game, MG

You beauty !!! just purchased some I & J Whiting fillets, caught in NZ packed in China, what a joke , how fresh and edible are these going to be ? Are they safe to eat ? Packed in China

Builders’ friend. Just how far Labor has moved away from being the party of the workers is evident in the Queensland government’s deferral for 2 years of construction industry reforms to ensure tradies get paid. The builders lobbied the government and the government acceded. Meanwhile subbies will continue to go unpaid by builders going bust and starting up again. How hard would it be for builders to set up a trust account if the legislation was kept simple? Two more years is a joke.

KenW, I just missed last night’s ep of MAFS. Can you bring up to speed please? Luigi

Ironically, the things that made Gold Coast so popular with sea-changers from interstate are being destroyed by the unprecedented population boom and the strain it has put on housing, roads, and the health and education systems. Increased population also brings with it increased crime rates.

Latitude financial -got hacked - I had the unpleasant experience to deal with this hopeless, unprofessional business. The whole business based overseas surprise, surprise with thousands of customers details kept under questionable security.

Minister Mick de Brenni put a pause on project trust account that would have safeguarded tradies against big builders going broke owing them money. The tradie gets stuffed again and probably because de Brenni is giving into the big guys in the building industry. I hope all tradies remember this at next Qld election.

Let’s see the nrl scrum returned to what it should be. The ball rolled into the tunnel set up by the two opposing teams. This is why the scrum has two hookers to rake the ball out. It creates some interest in the scrum. At present 99% of scrums are won by the team feeding the scrum. No contesting exist. If not do away with the terms Props, Hooker and Lock. Nobody locks a scrum anymore. It is a total joke. Put some interest back into the scrum or just give the ball to the opposing team and move on. Don’t continue on with, something used to be great to watch being contested to something that is wasting time.

JWH, Rangi, Noel, ASF, KSF, Tui, Big Artie and the rest of you rara types, how do you explain the red card in the Eng v Ire game? Your game is downing down the tube if this becomes the norm. WWE

Good to see the French- protesting pension age lift from 62 years to 64 . In Communist Australia pension is already 67 and going to 70 soon because our hopeless, corrupt Politicians spending our Super now so they hope that most people will die still working before they rich retirement. No protests, no push back, everything is ok, only in Australia.

As regards West Tigers coaching woes. Get rid of the dinosaur Tim Sheens and hand the reins to Benji Marshall NOW. I’m 73 yrs old and been following rugby union and rugby league for 60 odd yrs. I cannot recall Sheens doing anything as a player to inspire young players to match what Marshall has done. Give Benji control now!!! KSF.

Why are Chinese allowed to buy land in Australia ? We can’t buy land there. Zorro

To ASF. I found your remarks regarding the Blues losing to the Brumbies a week ago amusing mate. I suggest you check the facts on the other sports you dribbled on about too. We are now into week 5 of the Super Rugby competition, and that’s the only game an Aussie team has won against a Kiwi side. This weekend alone there were 3 trans Tasman games, and the Aussie teams lost all 3. Can’t wait for the Bledisloe and World Cups mate. Rangi.

How can this useless government plan an Olympics when we have a housing and cost of living crisis. The olympics are a waste of money and it won’t be ready in time and massively over budget and we would rather house athletes rather than the homeless people. Yep. Priorities are well and truly in check.

We flog them. Get rid of Warner’s never ending failures at the top and Kuwaja’s labouring torture that forces lame draws and we win. Bring in match winners who go at a rate, we win. Dump these 2 pensioners now from all forms even the fielding has gone up a notch or two.

They could have put cycle lanes in the walkways. Barney

Re Yatla Lightz: Doesnt the “artist” who made these still own them or have to approve any changrs? Thats what they told us years ago. 4218

The Voice will be just like a parking meter. It will just keep taking money.

Can you believe this. A police officer from Longreach has been charged for allegedly taking $36 worth of goods from the police station social club without paying. Now he is going the face his charge in court. At what cost to the community? Surely the integrity unity could address this matter without unnecessary expenses through a court. Suspension, delayed promotion or the like. And people wonder why I am so critical of our justice system. Squizz.

To No Name (GCB 20/3) the Silicon Valley Bank is not run by ‘woke Greens’ as you say. Silicon Valley Bank was founded in 1983 by former Bank of America managers Bill Biggerstaff and Robert Medearis to focus on the needs of startup companies. So capitalists again in it for themselves. Not much different to most banks!

So the ICC wants to put Putin in jail for doing what? Removing children from a war zone? Are these numpties for real? John brew

Sick to death of transgender whining, start your own sporting associatians !! let women compete against women !!!

So now we’re to be searched and asked to turn out our pockets at the footy. I couldn’t believe it when I was accosted by two women who asked me what was in my pocket and you’d better get used to this. Like hell will I be insulted by wannabe security, but more to the point, I can’t work out what they were looking for. I’m a 74 year old footy supporter, I had no backpack, wore just a Titans shirt and shorts so I couldn’t possibly be hiding anything. No way will I be putting up with this garbage every game. Oh yeah, the price of draught beer has gone up to $9.40 and they’ve reduced the schooner to 475 mls. Another joke and further rip off.

The council won’t do anything about the dangerous mayhem caused by speeding electric bikes and push bikes on pathways, especially on the beachfronts. They are too busy wasting millions of our ratepayers’ money on the useless maxi lights at Yatala/Bilinga and ‘artistic’ jumbo ferns. Meanwhile, no big kerbside rubbish cleanups like Brisbane and the Tweed Shire can somehow afford. This council needs to get the boot at the next elections. And they should see how
