WSL roundup: Manchester United sink Brighton as Liverpool rescue Spurs draw

- PA Media

Nikita Parris continued her fine form for Manchester United, scoring in each half to help her side to secure a 2-0 Women’s Super League win against Brighton. Parris has now scored eight goals in 12 league games this season prompting many to wonder whether she is due an England call-up, having missed out on the squad for the World Cup.

“It’s got to be hard to ignore, right? Because I think she’s in a really good space right now,” said Marc Skinner, her manager. “Even her back-to-play stuff has got better – she’s concentrating, linking play and her runs are perfect. She’s in a real good space and hopefully she gets rewarded for that if Sarina [Wiegman] and her team think that’s right at this moment.”

Brighton’s first game under the interim manager Mikey Harris, who has stepped in following the sacking of Melissa Phillips, began badly when Parris struck in the ninth minute, but they limited the home team to just the one shot on target in the first half. Geyse provided her second assist of the game for Parris in the second half though.

Leaders Chelsea eased past Everton

3-0 to record their eighth consecutive victory in all competitions. Guro Reiten gave Emma Hayes’ side a 27thminute lead from the penalty spot. The Norway international repeated the feat in the 72nd minute before Erin Cuthbert added a late third to keep the Blues three points clear of Manchester City and six clear of Arsenal after their surprise loss to West Ham.

Two late goals in three minutes from the England forwards Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly guided Manchester City to a 2-0 win against Leicester.

Willie Kirk’s side had frustrated City for more than 80 minutes before Hemp pounced on Khadija Shaw’s cross and then Kelly scored directly from a corner to secure the three points. The win moves City three clear of the thirdplaced Arsenal.

On Merseyside, Marie Hobinger struck in added time to cancel out Celin Bizet’s second-half goal as Liverpool drew 1-1 with Tottenham. The shared spoils means they stay level on 19 points, five behind Manchester United, with Liverpool ahead on goal difference.
