SERENA BEGINS RECORD QUEST
Serena Williams will begin her quest for a slice of grand slam history when she launches her Australian Open campaign against unseeded German Tatjana Maria today.
Williams is bidding to equal tennis great Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam singles crowns.
The 37-year-old, who has 23 majors to her name, is seeded No.16.
Williams returns to the Australian Open for the first time since her win in 2017 after missing last year’s tournament following the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia.
Williams and Maria, ranked No.73 in the world, have not played each other before.
