The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - NORTH ISLAND -

The Powderhorn Chateau is well known among Ohakune locals and the glitterati. At the time we visited, actor Sam Neill and director Taika Waititi and a film crew were guests, a fashion show was being planned and a wedding was scheduled. “Just a normal weekend,” says Annie Scarf who, with her husband Paul, is also pretty famous. They have owned the hotel for 40 or so years. Annie was a former nurse; Paul was in the ski business. He saw a vacant site with a carrot shed on it at the base of the mountain. First they moved a seven-bedroom homestead on, then they built the hotel and the Powderkeg Restaurant and Bar, where every skier gravitates at some stage. The Europeanstyle log building now accommodates the grandchildren of their original guests. Film-maker Sir Peter Jackson had an apartment in the hotel while he was filming The Lord of the Rings. 194 Mangawhero Terrace, Ohakune, (06) 385 8888, powderhorn.co.nz
