Cycle

The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - NORTH ISLAND -

After days of excellent food and drink, physical activity could be next on the menu. The Matakana cycle trail covers 14km, from the village to Point Wells and Omaha. There are several spots to stop and take in the ocean views (and catch a sneaky breath) and the path is well marked, with totem poles keeping riders on course. It pays to have some experience on a bike as there are sections of the trail that merge with the main road, as well as some gravel sections and a few small hills. If all of the exercise gets too much, there are wineries and cafes along the way that will happily help tired riders rehydrate. The trail starts from Matakana Village, but if unsure, there is a map available online. govt.nz/cycling-walking/
