Explore limestone country
The self-guided trail extends some 80 kilometres from Moeraki in the south to Duntroon in the northwest. It reveals more than 20 significant geological sites that explore the ancient, subterranean history of North Otago with its extinct volcanoes, mineral localities, fossil sites and major landforms from five million to 80 million years ago. These sites can be approached from any direction and the trail can be taken in 10-minute trips, as an expedition over several days or even over years. Some geologists have spent their adult lives examining and describing the ancient history of the region.
Two of the most spectacular Waitaki Valley sites on the trail are within a few minutes’ drive or cycle ride from Duntroon.
