Boating

The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - SOUTH ISLAND -

Lake Aviemore is said to have seven different winds that make it perfect for sailing boats, culminating in the Aviemore Classic, a regatta held every Labour Day. Boating, waterskiing, kayaking, swimming and other water sports draw about 10,000 people to the lakes every year but they virtually vanish in the vastness of the water frontage.

An annual jetboat race, usually held in October, is the Canterbury section of the New Zealand Jet Boat Marathon.

The boats start at the Waitaki Bridge on State Highway 1 near the east coast, roar up to the Kurow/Haka bridges and then return to the coast.
