For the kids

The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - SOUTH ISLAND -

“Keep your children climbing our walls, not yours.” That’s the generous advice of the vertically voracious folk at the Wanaka climbing centre. It’s the perfect wet-weather option for the whole family. There’s a sport climbing wall for the perpendicularly pumped, and a clip‘n’climb area for the inexperienced/ lily-livered (a cunning automatic belay device takes in the slack as you climb and then lowers you gently to the ground -even three-year-olds can do it). And if any in your group is not enthralled by upward mobility, they can sneak off next door to Ruby’s Cinema & Bar for a bit of boutique celluloid. Clip‘n’climb sessions last for an hour; bookings are essential. Basecamp, Wanaka Climbing Centre, 50 Cardrona Valley Road, (03) 443 1110, basecampwanaka.co.nz
