Kawau Beach House

The Insider's Guide to New Zealand - - MATAKANA -

Step off the ferry in Vivian Bay and take a deep breath. Look down into the clear water and imagine your cell phone sinking to the bottom. It feels good doesn’t it? You won’t be needing it here. A good book, an appetite and good company (if you feel like it) are the Kawau Beach House essentials.

This beachfront property offers three types of accommodation depending on budget and needs, with rooms starting at about $350 and reaching $650 for beachfront deluxe. The large waterfront deck overlooking the beach feels exclusive and there are loungers for everyone. Prefer native bush to sand? The rooms nestled in the bush are blissfully quiet. The only alarm is the local tui. Be prepared for stairs.

The on-site restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner but bookings are essential. With no roads on the island, popping out for dinner isn’t as common as on the mainland. We recommend ordering a platter and a glass of wine and soaking up silence. No noise, no traffic, no pedestrians – and sometimes no people. Our favourite spot is the end of the wharf where there are matching chairs. Where else can you catch a fish from a sun lounger?
