Faroese Shawl

Traditional lace design

- ELIZABETH LOVICK

ELIZABETH LOVICK loves to explore traditional shawl constructions from around Europe, and her latest design for The Knitter is based on the classic Faroese shape. These comprise two triangles with a central gusset between them; the result is that this type of shawl stays on the shoulders better than many flat shawls. Her design is knitted in a hand-dyed artisan yarn from Sweet Georgia, called Bulletproof Sock. PATTERN NOTES The shawl is knitted from the bottom up. Each row consists of a five-stitch border, one triangular ‘wing’, the back gusset, a second triangular ‘wing’, and a five-stitch border. Separate charts are given for the wings and the border. At the shoulders, extra stitches are decreased in the wings. Then one border is knitted along the remaining stitches, removing them, and the two borders are grafted together.
