Long-line cardigan with an in­tar­sia colour-block de­sign

YARN NOTE

Yarns B and C are held to­gether where they ap­pear, so th­ese sec­tions are worked us­ing one strand each of yarns B and C held to­gether. All other sec­tions in all other yarns are worked us­ing a sin­gle strand of yarn.

PAT­TERN NOTE

The chart shows the de­sign as it ap­pears on the fronts of gar­ment, and the sleeves. The de­sign on the back is re­versed (so the pat­tern matches along the side seams). When work­ing the fronts and sleeves, work odd-num­bered RS rows read­ing the chart from right to left. But, when work­ing Back, re­v­erse the de­sign by work­ing odd-num­bered RS rows read­ing the chart from left to right.

BACK

Us­ing 3.25mm nee­dles and yarn F, cast on 148 ( 158: 170: 182: 194) sts. Work in garter st for 3cm, end­ing with RS fac­ing for next row. Change to 3.75mm nee­dles. Beg on st 171 ( 176: 182: 188: 194) and end­ing on st 24 ( 19: 13: 7: 1), re­mem­ber­ing nd to re­v­erse de­sign on the chart (see Pat­tern Note) and us­ing the in­tar­sia tech­nique by twist­ing yarns around each other on the wrong side when chang­ing colour, cont in patt from Chart as folls: Cont straight un­til chart row 260 has been com­pleted, end­ing with RS fac­ing for next row.

SHAPE SHOUL­DERS

Keep­ing patt cor­rect, cast off 4 ( 4: 5: 5: 5) sts at beg of next 22 ( 12: 32: 22: 10) rows, then 5( 5:-:6: 6) sts at beg of foll 10 ( 20:-:10: 22) rows. Cast off 5 ( 5: 5: 6: 6) sts at beg of next row. Cast off rem 5 ( 5: 5: 6: 6) sts.

LEFT FRONT

Us­ing 3.25mm nee­dles and yarn F, cast on 74 ( 79: 85: 91: 97) sts. Work in garter st for 3cm, end­ing with RS fac­ing for next row. Change to 3.75mm nee­dles. Beg on st 24 ( 19: 13: 7: 1) and end­ing on st 97 (see Pat­tern Note), cont in patt from chart as folls: Cont straight un­til chart row 260 has been com­pleted, end­ing with RS fac­ing for next row.

SHAPE SHOUL­DER

Keep­ing patt cor­rect, cast off 4 ( 4: 5: 5: 5) sts at beg of next and foll 10 ( 5: 15: 10: 4) alt rows, then 5 ( 5:-:6: 6) sts at beg of foll 5 ( 10:-:5: 11) alt rows. Work 1 row. Cast off rem 5 ( 5: 5: 6: 6) sts.

RIGHT FRONT

Work to match Left Front, re­vers­ing shap­ings, but beg on st 98 and end­ing on st 171 ( 176: 182: 188: 194) of chart.

SLEEVES

Us­ing 3.25mm nee­dles and yarn F, cast on 90 ( 96: 104: 110: 118) sts. Work in garter st for 3cm, end­ing with RS fac­ing for next row. Change to 3.75mm nee­dles. Beg on st 53 ( 50: 46: 43: 39) and end­ing on st 142 ( 145: 149: 152: 156) (see Pat­tern Note), cont in patt from chart as folls: Cont straight un­til Sleeve meas 34 ( 34: 35: 35: 35) cm, end­ing with RS fac­ing for next row.

SHAPE TOP

Keep­ing patt cor­rect, cast off 4 ( 4: 5: 5: 5) sts at beg of next 10 ( 6: 14: 10: 4) rows, then 5( 5:-:6: 6) sts at beg of foll 4 ( 8:-:4: 10) rows. Cast off rem 30 ( 32: 34: 36: 38) sts.

MAK­ING UP

Block pieces care­fully, fol­low­ing any yarn care in­struc­tions on the ball band.

Join both shoul­der seams us­ing back stitch, or mat­tress stitch if pre­ferred – fronts should meet at cen­tre back neck.

FRONT BAND

With RS fac­ing, us­ing 3.25mm cir­cu­lar nee­dle and yarn F, beg and end­ing at front cast-on edges, pick up and knit 211 sts up right front open­ing edge, then 211 sts down left front open­ing edge. 422 sts. Work in garter st for 5cm, end­ing with WS fac­ing for next row. Cast off knit­wise (on WS). Mark points along side seam edges of Back and Fronts 21 ( 22 :24: 25 :27) cm ei­ther side of shoul­der seams (to de­note base of armhole open­ings). Place cen­tre of cast-off edge of Sleeve to shoul­der seam. Sew top of Sleeve to body, us­ing mark­ers as a guide. Join side and sleeve seams. Gen­tly block gar­ment to mea­sure­ments, fol­low­ing any yarn care in­struc­tions on the ball band.
