When work­ing mo­tif charts, on rounds where there are a large num­ber of stitches plain be­tween each set of mo­tifs, it is best to use short lengths of yarn, ap­prox 30cm long, start­ing with a new one on each rel­e­vant round, so that you don’t have to strand yarn over the en­tire round.


Us­ing 4mm straight nee­dles, yarn A and the cable cast-on method, cast on 68 sts. Row 1 (RS): *K1, P1; rep from * to end. Row 2 (WS): *P1, K1; rep from * to end. Row 3 (but­ton­hole): *K1, P1; rep from * to last 4 sts, K1, yo, K2­tog, P1. Row 4: *P1, K1; rep from * to end.


Mark­ers will be placed be­fore and af­ter the raglan stitch. Row 5: (K1, P1) twice, K10, pm, K1, pm, K8, pm, K1, pm, K20, pm, K1, pm, K8, pm, K1, pm, K10, (K1, P1) twice. Row 6 and all even rows (WS): (P1, K1) twice, P to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice. Row 7 (RS, inc): (K1, P1) twice, *K to mrk, M1L, slm, K1, slm, M1R; rep from * 3 more times, K to last 4 sts, (K1, P1) twice. 8 sts inc’d. Re­peat last 2 rows 14 ( 16: 18: 20) more times, AND AT THE SAME TIME work­ing fur­ther but­ton­holes on Rows 11, 23 and -(-:35: 35) by work­ing to last 4 sts and work­ing as: K1, yo, K2­tog, P1. Work 1 row straight, end­ing af­ter a WS row. 188 ( 204: 220: 236) sts.


Change to 4mm cir­cu­lar nee­dles. Set-up row (RS): (K1, P1) twice, K26 ( 28: 30: 32), trans­fer 38 ( 42: 46: 50) sleeve sts to waste yarn, cast on 4 sts for un­der­arm, K52 ( 56: 60: 64) sts for front, cast on 4 sts for un­der­arm, trans­fer 38 ( 42: 46: 50) sleeve sts to waste yarn, K26 ( 28: 30: 32), end 4 sts be­fore end of round. Leave the last 4 sts on the nee­dle, un­worked. Join to work in the round by work­ing the 4 stitches of each but­ton band to­gether as foll: With RS still fac­ing, en­sure the but­ton­hole band is ly­ing on top of the but­ton band. *Knit the next stitch to­gether with the first stitch of next round, purl the next stitch to­gether with the sec­ond stitch of the next round; rep from * once more. 116 ( 124: 132: 140) sts. Next round (par­tial): (K1, P1) 14 ( 15: 16: 17) times, pm. Round now be­gins at cen­tre of un­der­arm. Round 1: *P1, K1; rep from * to end. Round 2: *K1, P1; rep from * to end. Re­peat last 2 rounds 0 ( 1: 2: 3) more times.


Sizes 6mths and 12mths only (op­tional) If de­sired, you can work ex­tra in­creases now to give a lit­tle more room in the dress. If pre­ferred, inc 8 sts evenly across first of fol­low­ing plain rounds and then fol­low­ing skirt mo­tif in­struc­tions for sizes - (-:18mths: 24mths) in­stead of those given for your size. 124 ( 132:-:-) sts. All sizes Knit 5 ( 6: 7: 8) rounds.


Set-up round: *K1 ( 3: 0: 2) in A, work 55 ( 55: 65: 65) sts from Chart A ( A: B: B), K2 ( 4: 1: 3) in A; rep from * once more. Cont as set un­til chart is com­plete.
