SLIP STITCH PATTERN

-

NICOLA DIGGINS Shipping Forecast

THE HORIZONTAL stripes on this T-shirt take a 90-degree turn on the centre front, by working a slip stitch pattern. The garment, designed by Nicola Diggins, is knitted flat from the bottom up. The shoulders are sloped with German short rows and joined using the three-needle cast-off. Nicola has knitted her top in Ainsworth & Prin’s Merino and Silk Single, a 4ply hand-dyed yarn from her own range.

PATTERN NOTES GERMAN SHORT ROWS

Work in pattern until the point at which the pattern says turn. Turn work. Leave the remaining stitches unworked on the RH needle.

On a purl row

Slip the first stitch on the left needle, purlwise with the yarn in front from the left to the right needle. Pull the working yarn firmly up and away from you towards the back of the work. This will tighten the stitch and give it a double leg, and it will look like two stitches instead of one - a double stitch (DS). The DS is counted as one stitch. Bring the yarn between the needles and continue to purl to the end of the row. On a knit row

Bring the yarn between the needles to the front of the work. Slip the first stitch on the left needle, purlwise with the yarn in front. Pull the working yarn firmly up and towards the back of the work. This will tighten the stitch and give it a double leg, and it will look like two stitches instead of one - a double stitch (DS). Continue to knit to the end of the row.

When you come to a DS on a following row, treat it as a single stitch and work as indicated in the pattern.

THREE NEEDLE CAST OFF

Place two matching shoulder seams back on the 3.75mm needles with the RS together and the needle points facing the same way. Hold the needles parallel, and with a third needle knit together one stitch from the front and one stitch from the back needle. Repeat for the next stitch on both needles. Pass the first stitch worked over the second to cast it off in the normal way. Repeat until all the stitches are cast off.
