CHART PATTERN SOCKS Repose

ADORNED WITH a pretty lace stitch pattern, this sock design by Helen Kurtz has been knitted in a yak-merino sock yarn, hand-dyed by Layfamilyy­arn. Helen has used a mini skein in a complement­ary shade for the cuffs, heels and toes, so this is a great opportunit­y to use up some leftover sock yarn from your stash. (written instructio­ns)

Rounds 1-4: Knit.

Round 5: *K2, K2tog, K2, yo; rep from * to end of round.

Round 6: Knit.

Round 7: *K1, K2tog, K2, yo, K1; rep from * to end of round.

Round 8: Knit.

Round 9: *K2tog, K2, yo, K2; rep from * to end of round.

CUFF

Using 2.5mm needles and yarn B, cast on 54 ( 60: 66) sts.

Pm and join to work in the round, taking care not to twist sts.

Rib round: *K1tbl, P1; rep from * to end of round.

Work 9 further rounds in rib.

Change to yarn A.

LEG

Using yarn A, repeating sts 9 ( 10: 11) times around, work Rounds 1-9 of Chart Pattern from chart or written instructio­ns 5 ( 6: 7) times in total, then rep Round 1 only once more.

Size M only

Rep Round 2 once more.

Sizes S and L only

Next round: Knit to last 4 sts, M1, K2, slip next 2 sts to RH needle, remove beg of round mrk, return 2 unworked sts back to LH needle (these will be the start of the instep once the heel is complete).

55 (-:67) sts.

All sizes Cut yarn A.

HEEL FLAP

Turn work to WS. The heel flap is worked back and forth over the last 28 ( 30: 34) sts that have just been worked. Leave rem sts on hold for instep.

Join yarn B.

Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, P27 ( 29: 33), turn.

28 ( 30: 34) heel sts.

Row 2 (RS): *Sl 1, K1; rep from * to end, turn.

Rep these 2 rows a further 13 ( 14: 16) times.

HEEL TURN

Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, P15 ( 16: 18), P2tog, P1, turn. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, K5, SSK, K1, turn.

Row 3: Sl 1, purl to 1 st before gap, P2tog, P1, turn.

Row 4: Sl 1, knit to 1 st before gap, SSK, K1, turn.

Rep Rows 3-4 until you have 18 ( 18: 22) heel sts remaining and ending after a RS row. For size M only, you should be at the end of the heel sts.

Sizes S and L only

Next row (WS): Sl 1, P14 (-:16), P2tog, P0 (-:1). 17 (-:21) sts.

Next row (RS): Sl 1, K6 (-:8), K2tog, K6 (-:7), SSK, K0 (-:1). 15 (-:19) sts.

All sizes

15 ( 18: 19) heel sts. Cut yarn B.

GUSSET

Note: Read ahead; shaping and pattern are worked AT THE SAME TIME.

Using yarn A, pick up and knit 14 ( 15: 17) sts down side of heel flap, pm, starting with Round 3 work in patt as set across 27 ( 30: 33) instep sts, pm, pick up and knit 14 ( 15: 17) stitches up the side of the heel flap, then K15 ( 18: 19) heel sts and pm for beg of round. 70 ( 78: 86) sts.

Sizes S and L only

Note that Main Pattern on the instep is worked as set previously on the leg, so the foll rounds are worked between the instep mrks as:

Round 5: K2, *K2, K2tog, K2, yo; rep from * to 1 st before mrk, K1.

Round 7: K2, *K1, K2tog, K2, yo, K1; rep from * to 1 st before mrk, K1.

Round 9: K2, *K2tog, K2, yo, K2; rep from * to 1 st before mrk, K1.

AT THE SAME TIME as shaping the gusset.

Size M only

Cont to follow Main patt for instep between mrks as set on the leg, which is the same as previously instructed AT THE SAME TIME as shaping the gusset.

All sizes

Round 1: K to 3 sts before mrk, K2tog, K1, slm, work in patt across instep to next mrk, slm, K1, SSK, knit to end of round.

2 sts dec’d.

Round 2: K to mrk, slm, work in patt across instep to next mrk, slm, knit to end of round.

Rep Rounds 1-2 until 54 ( 60: 66) sts remain.

Cont as set until foot meas 4 ( :5) cm less than desired length, ending after a Round 1, 2, 3 or 4 of Main Patt. If needed, work a few plain rounds of st st.

Cut yarn A.

TOE

Join yarn B.

Round 1: (Knit to 3 sts before mrk, K2tog, K1, slm, K1, SSK) twice, knit to end of round. 4 sts dec’d.

Round 2: Knit.

Rep these 2 rounds until 22 ( 24: 26) sts remain.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Divide rem sts between two needles and graft sts together using Kitchener stitch.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
