Looking to take your first steps into sock knitting, and not sure where to start? As well as checking out your local yarn shop to see if they offer sock classes, you should take a look online, as a host of designers have made resources available for novice knitters. A first port of call should be Winwick Mum, aka Christine Perry, who has made it her mission to get people making socks, and offers an excellent range of tutorials and free patterns. www.winwickmum.co.uk

The Fibre Co. aims to support new sock knitters with its ‘One Sock’ programme. Kate Atherley designed the ‘One Sock’ pattern, a classic ‘vanilla’ sock suitable for beginners and sized to fit babies all the way up to adults. Buy the pattern or the One Sock knitting kit and you’ll receive a guidebook to help you every step of the way. You can find video sock knitting tutorials from Kate on

The Fibre Co.’s YouTube channel – search ‘Sock’ to see them all. www.youtube.com/@TheFibreCo

Another simple pattern to try if you’re a newbie is ‘Rye’ from the TinCanKnits team. The pattern is free to download, and is accompanied by an online tutorial taking you through every step –

I’ve made loads of ‘Ryes’ for both adults and children. https://blog. tincanknits.com/2013/10/03/socks/

If you’ve knitted a fair few socks already and fancy developing your own unique pattern, check out Rhian Drinkwater’s ‘Introduction to Sock Design’ masterclass, which featured in The Knitter issue 176 – you can buy a PDF copy from www.gathered. how/digital-issues/
