Driver awareness program a necessity

The Morning Bulletin - - OPINION -

I WOULD like to thank Yeppoon and Capricorn Rotary clubs for the opportunity to present the speed and stopping section of the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program on Monday to Yeppoon High school students.

I would also like to thank Adam from the police traffic branch for his assistance and all of the volunteers.

The demonstration was to make young people aware of the safety features in motor vehicles and of the dangers of speeding and the effects of stopping safely.

There were many other presentations done on the day, to cover other topics in regards to road safety.

The practical demonstration highlighted how much 10km/h over the speed limit can make a difference in stopping.

This demonstration showed how long it can take for a 1.3 ton car to stop in an emergency at 60km/h and the importance of maintaining a safe following distance from the vehicle in front.

I also explained the dangers of cutting in front of a heavily loaded truck weighing up to 60 tons while they are slowing down and the fact that they need more stopping room than a motor car.

Hopefully some lives may be saved from the day’s presentation and that a lot of information is shared in regards to road safety. Leyland Barnett
