Rocky to mark World Chimp Day
ROCKHAMPTON Zoo will today host a series of special keeper talks to mark the first World Chimpanzee Day, an initiative to stimulate both wild and captive chimpanzee care and conservation communities and to engage and educate audiences and networks.
Parks Committee chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said Rockhampton Zoo was proud to take part in the global campaign.
“As the only zoo in Queensland which has chimpanzees, this is a cause close to the heart for many of our keepers who care for the group here in Rockhampton,” she said.
“We’ll have our life sciences co-ordinator holding talks at the chimp enclosure on the hour from 11am to 2pm so if you’re visiting make sure you pop by and say hello.
“Our group here in Rocky definitely has a special place in the community’s heart so it’s important that we capitalise on their popularity to educate visitors about the plight of chimpanzees in the wild.”
