A ‘horrific’ crime scene at Calliope
POLICE have found a tomahawk-like axe near the scene of a double murder at Calliope.
At a press conference yesterday afternoon, Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said the weapon would form part of the investigation into the deaths of a 63-year man and 60-year old woman, who were found at a caravan park on Stowe Road on Thursday afternoon.
“We’ll have further tests conducted on that weapon in Brisbane,” Insp Shadlow said.
A 64-year-old man is in police custody, and is assisting police with their investigations.
Insp Shadlow said the man was found in a nearby park, where he handed himself to police.
Charges have yet to be laid. He also said all three were known to each other, and long term residents of the park.
The 63-year old man was found bloodied outside his caravan, and the 60-year-old woman was found inside a separate caravan nearby.
Each had suffered significant wounds.
“Both scenes were quite horrific for both police and emergency services,” Insp Shadlow said.
Officers from the Homicide Investigation Unit in Brisbane were flown up to help Gladstone police yesterday morning, in addition to crews from Rockhampton and Biloela.
The initial call to police was made about 5pm Thursday, after a resident spotted the 63-year old man outside his caravan.
“Our investigations to date indicate that the incidents may have occurred sometime between 3.30pm-4.40pm Thursday,” Insp Shadlow said.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have noticed or heard something or seen anyone suspicious, or something out of the ordinary, to contact us.”
A park resident, who did not wish to be named, said the pair were both “long-term residents of the park and nice people”.
They took in a dog that belonged to one of the dead pair, to find a new home for the animal.
Anyone with information is urged by police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or PoliceLink on 131 444.
