in Tasmania is offering shelters for four-legged family members when there is an emergency evacuation.

In what is believed to the be the first of its kind in the country, the council has a portable emergency shelter for small domestic animals.

The shelter has been made using a 12m shipping container by Royal Wolf.

Peter Denholm, Launceston City Council team leader for regulation and municipal emergency management deputy co-ordinator, said the council had identified the need for a portable facility.

He said research had shown that in evacuation situation people were willing to put their own lives and those of emergency-service workers at risk, because they did not want to leave their pets or had concerns about how they would be catered for.

“Pets are part of the family,” Mr Denholm said.
