Ladies who take lead
Three familiar faces among Shine finalist for Rural Weekly readers
THE Shine Awards 2018 finalists have been announced.
Among the 18 finalists are three women whose stories were originally shared in Rural Weekly.
The Shine Awards celebrates the achievements and contributions of women across rural and regional Australia. There are six categories - Passion, Courage, Belief, Dedication, Spirit and Grace.
The winners, and an overall winner, will be announced next Wednesday, November 21, in a special Shine Awards magazine and online at theweeklytimes.com.au.
Shelly Hawkins from Herbertvale Station near Camooweal is a finalist in the Belief category for her unique plan to launch a hiking venture on her family’s remote cattle station.
The Belief category honours rural women who have a vision to improve or enhance their community or business, and see that vision through.
Grafton real estate agent JoJo Newby is a finalist in the Spirit category, which recognises women whose strength of character helps them make a difference to their community or industry.
JoJo was the face of a drought-relief campaign to help farmers across northern NSW and Queensland earlier this year. She pledged to donate $1000 for each property she sold to drought relief, and inspired others to make donations.
Jillaroo Zoe Hayes is a finalist in the Courage category, which recognises women who have made achievements in the face of adversity. Zoe, 23, lost her mother to suicide when she was just 17. The young woman from Perth then struggled with depression herself, and found support by turning to a life working as a jillaroo on remote cattle stations across Queensland and Western Australia. Now mustering stock on Mount Clere Station at Meekatharra, Zoe is working to elevate the conversation about rural mental health on social media.
FINALIST: Shelly Hawkins was nominated in the Belief category of the Shine Awards. The station mum has launched a hiking business from her family’s property in outback Queensland.
