BALLINA TRAINER’S BIG PLANS FOR LATINO LOVER
Lover is on trial for a crack at the $50,000 Mornington Handicap (2100m) at Tamworth when the Ballina gelding runs at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
That’s the aim young Ballina trainer Ethan Ensby has set his gelding after his good win at Ballina last week.
Ensby, who was at Grafton yesterday with long-priced Nature Train, is hopeful Latino Lover can continue his good form at the Gold Coast where he has won twice in recent weeks.
The 22-year-old trainer has had a great run over the past month with a winner every week.
The latest was Golden Valley’s win at the Gold Coast on Saturday after Latino Lover had won at Ballina last TuesLATINO day.
“We are having a great run,” Ensby said. “About time.” Latino Lover won well at Ballina, a Class 3 after he had won a maiden at the Gold Coast.
“That was my fourth win at the Gold Coast too and my fifth win in the last four weeks,” Ensby said.
“I’ll take Latino Lover back to the Gold Coast on Saturday and if he can win that I’ll look at going out to Tamworth for the Mornington.
“I’d like to hope we can win out there too only need a soft track.
“A Heavy 10 would be even better but whether they get rain out there or not might decide if we go too.
“But he’s got to perform at the Gold Coast to warrant a trip out there for the Mornington.”
The $50,000 Mornington Handicap (2100m) is one of the main support races to the $150,000 Mercure Tamworth Cup (1400m) on Sunday, April 29, when the Tamworth Jockey Club disperses more than $400,000 in prizemoney.
While Ensby is running Latino Lover at the Gold Coast he has four of his small team entered at Ballina on Saturday as well.
The Ballina Jockey Club has six $10,000 races programmed and after receiving 58 nominations this morning has extended nominations on all six races to 11am tomorrow.
“Chelsea Diamond would be my best chance at Ballina,” Ensby confirmed.
‘She’s been working pretty well, I’m pretty happy with her at the moment.
“I think she is going well enough to win a couple of TAB races but she is a temperamental little thing.”
He also has Iggy’s Boy Tezza and Quick Smart entered although Tezza is also entered at Coffs Harbour on Thursday.
“He’s in a very winnable race at Ballina on Saturday but he’s also a chance at Coffs Harbour although Steve (Lee) and Dan (Bowen) also have a couple of nice ones going around in that.”
