THE return of shark nets to the North Coast has not been ruled out by the Department of Primary Industries.

This follows a shark attack at Shelly Beach on Wednesday in which surfer Lee Jonsson was bitten

A DPI spokeswoman said the State Government would “put the nets back in at any time if there is sufficient evidence of an increase in shark activity or a change in community sentiment”.

But the DPI abandoned its shark net ‘trial’ earlier this year because community support had evaporated. A survey showed that between 56 per cent and 66 per cent of residents in Ballina Shire and Evans Head opposed nets.
