On eating disorders
I AM writing in response to an article published on October 10 concerning eating disorder treatment. It was heartening to see the interest in this very important issue.
I would like to clarify the service framework around eating disorders in the local area as it relates to your readers.
The NSW Government’s NSW Service Plan for People with Eating Disorders 2013-2018 highlights the importance of service provision for people with eating disorders as core business for the health system.
As a result of this plan, Northern NSW Local Health District has employed a local Eating Disorder Coordinator to help assist with service coordination, workforce development, clinical consultation, and models of care.
Within Northern NSW Local Health District people can access treatment for an eating disorder in an inpatient medical setting or as an outpatient with our local community mental health teams.
Some people may wish to access private clinicians, and in this area we are fortunate to have a Northern NSW Eating Disorder Practitioner Network comprised of clinicians across medical and allied health disciplines with an interest in this area.
For community mental health referrals, people can refer by calling the mental health access line on 1800 011 511, or a referral may be initiated via a General Practitioner.
North Coast Primary Health Network has recently released the Health Pathways for Eating Disorders, enabling GPs to access information on diagnosis, treatment, and referral pathways.
The InsideOut Institute is Australia’s national institute for research and clinical excellence in eating disorders, and the local Eating Disorders Coordinator works closely with this organization. Anyone wishing to access private treatment can visit the InsideOut Institute website: https://insideoutinstitute.org.au to find information about private clinicians in the local area.
For more information, residents in Northern NSW can contact the Eating Disorder Coordinator, Deanna Bowen, on 6620 7587. Dee Robinson, Northern NSW Local Health District.
