Results are in: Aussies’ guilty pleasures and biggest regrets
WHEN it comes to food and drink, Aussies have nominated coffee and booze as the two things they can’t live without – and they feel guilty about it.
A News Corp Australia survey has lifted the lid on our food-related habits, exposing our guilty pleasures, biggest regrets, and the items we’re obsessed with.
And not only could they be costing us a small fortune but overindulgence could also be putting our health at risk.
More than 1000 adults took part in the taste.com.au questionnaire, and they revealed above all else, maintaining good health and preventing illness was their biggest motivation for eating healthy.
While many of us hope a nutrition-rich diet would lead to a better physique, reaching an optimal weight stood out as the top goal for eating well.
But while we might have good intentions to overhaul our diet, obstacles are plentiful.
Fast food proved to be our biggest food-related regret, followed by sweets including chocolates and ice-cream.
And though a doughnut or carb-filled cake might tempt us, we certainly don’t love them after, with indulgent baked goods taking third place.
Many respondents indicated sweets were their guilty pleasure, with alcohol and fast food also making the top three in this category.
Nutrition Plus dietitian Melanie McGrice explained the results were reflective of what she saw in her everyday practice, adding that the nation’s relationship with food needed work. She added that although we knew not to eat so much of these foods, it was easier to say “yes” than “no”.
“My work is now much more focused around helping people with strategies to achieve their dietary goals,” Ms McGrice said.
“You wouldn’t find a child in Africa feeling guilty about eating some sweets because it’s such a novel occurrence. The reason why Aussies experience guilt is that it’s no longer a treat, it’s more likely an overindulgence.
“There’s no point feeling guilty. Instead, learn from it. Ask yourself questions such as ‘when I’m in this situation next time, what could I do differently so that it doesn’t happen again?’.”
While Australians could be commended for their love of coffee, their love of the bottle has caused alarm.
Beer, wine and spirits took second place on the list of items we couldn’t live without, and also emerged as one of our top guilty pleasures.
WHAT TEMPTS US: Fast food, chocolate, doughnuts, coffee and alcohol are among our biggest regrets and guilty pleasures.
