Small axe found near scene of suspected double murder
Man, 64, in police custody
POLICE have found a small tomahawk-like axe near the scene of two deaths at Calliope.
At a press conference yesterday afternoon, detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said the weapon would form part of the investigation into the deaths of a 63-year man and 60-year old woman, who
were found at a caravan park on Stowe Rd on Thursday afternoon.
“We’ll have further tests conducted on that weapon in Brisbane,” Insp Shadlow said.
A 64-year old man is in police custody and assisting police with their investigations.
Insp Shadlow said the man was found in a nearby park, where he willingly handed himself to police.
No charges had been laid yesterday.
He also said all three were known to each other and were long-term residents of the caravan park.
The 63-year old man was found bloodied outside his caravan, while the 60-year old woman was inside a separate caravan nearby.
Each had significant wounds.
“Both scenes were quite horrific for both police and emergency services,” Insp Shadlow said.
Officers from the Homicide Investigation Unit in Brisbane were flown up to assist Gladstone police on Friday morning, in addition to crews from Rockhampton and Biloela.
Police also established a forward command post at the caravan park.
The initial call to police happened at about 5pm Thursday, after a resident spotted the 63year old man outside his caravan. “Our investigations to date indicate that the incidents may have occurred sometime between 3.30pm to 4.40pm,” Insp Shadlow said.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have noticed or heard something or seen anyone suspicious, or something out of the ordinary, to contact us.”
A park resident, who did not wish to be named, said the pair were both “long-term residents of the park and very nice people”.
Another resident took in a dog that allegedly belonged to one of the deceased and said they were hoping to find a new home for it.
Police urge anyone with information about the incident to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Policelink on 131 444.
