MP speaks on ADF fire support

The Observer - - NEWS -

MEMBER for Gladstone Glenn Butcher has responded to Federal representatives requesting Australian Defence Force support to fight the region’s bushfires.

Mr Butcher said the State Disaster Coordinator had asked the ADF if it could offer assistance “and they couldn’t offer any”. “Firefighting is not the ADF’s core business,” Mr Butcher said.

A government spokesman said ADF personnel were “not trained as firefighters” and the state disaster coordinator, district disaster coordinator and ADF liaison officer were “of the view that the fire did not meet the threshold for ADF involvement”.
