On the road to fun motor rally

The Riverine Herald - - ECHUCA MOAMA AUTO -

IF YOU happen to see a number of classic cars meandering somewhat aimlessly around the region’s roads this weekend, there is a reasonable explanation for it.

The second annual Moama Historic Car Club Rally is on Sunday and about 30 cars are expected to take part.

Cars from the 1950s through to modern vehicles and everything from MGs, Morris Minors and Jaguars to Mustangs, Holdens and Fords will be on the rally.

Evan Catlow, one of the rally’s organisers, said the day was all about fun and laughs.

‘‘It’s about entertainment and getting people to use their older vehicles,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re not strict on people using old cars but we do prefer it. ‘‘We’re hoping to build it up so next year is a really big event.’’

Last year’s inaugural rally attracted 18 cars which amounted to about 45 people.

‘‘With two or more people in a car, the 26 to 30 cars this year means there will be about 60-odd people,’’ Mr Catlow said.

Participants will start the rally at the silo art feature in Rochester at 8.15am and then follow a series of clues to move on to the next checkpoint.

The three organisers are the only ones who know the route of Sunday’s rally and are keen to keep clues close to the chest and not give too much away ahead of the rally.

‘‘We’ve changed it up a little from last year,’’ Mr Catlow said.

‘‘Although we had less cars last year everybody had a great time.’’

The cost of entry is $25 per vehicle and people need to bring a full tank of fuel as well as a number of other assorted intriguing items including a compass, a box of matches, two pens, a spark plug, plastic bag and an umbrella. Each car must have a minimum of one driver and one navigator and organisers are promising more surprises, more lost vehicles, more cryptic clues and more laughs.

There will be prizes handed out at the end of the rally which is expected around 3pm.

Anyone still interested in joining the rally should notify organisers so enough packs are made up for entrants.
