Don’t leave it, nominate for Australia Day awards now

The Riverine Herald - - NEWS -

NOMINATIONS for next year’s Australia Day awards close on Friday.

And for the first time Murray River Council and Campaspe Shire are combining their events so Australia Day committee chair Mike Stansbury is predicting it will be bigger than ever.

‘‘Closing date is fast approaching for nominations for the six categories so right now is the time to nominate who you or your club or organisation would like to see honoured,’’ Mr Stansbury said.

‘‘Next year on January 26, Australia Day, we will see a combined Murray River Council and Campaspe Shire Echuca celebration at the Aquatic Reserve.

‘‘It will be a bigger event with more to see, new music items, items for the children and beautiful historic cars to see.

‘‘More details will be announced closer to the day.’’

Mr Stansbury said he would like to see an increase in nominations.

‘‘Each year I get asked ‘Why isn’t so and so sports person of the year or citizen of the year?’,’’ he said.

‘‘Well, the answer is nobody nominated them and the Australia Day committee cannot make nominations. We can only collect nominations and present them to an independent judge.

‘‘So readers it’s up to you and your clubs and associations to get a form from Campaspe Shire’s website, community-recognition page, or fill one in online.’’

Alternatively, people can phone Mr Stansbury on 0418 323 716 and he will get one to you.

People can nominate in the following categories — citizen of the year; young citizen of the year; sports person of the year; young sports person of the year; arts/culture citizen of the year; community event or group of the year.

‘‘Now is the time to take action, don’t leave it to somebody else, nominate now,’’ Mr Stansbury said.
