Photospace takes it easy
One of the busiest and most exciting photographic exhibition spaces in New Zealand has decided to dial down the pace of its shows this year, giving its artists more time to shine.
Wellington’s Photospace gallery hosted 22 photography exhibitions (plus 10 shows of other visual media under the Gilberd Marriott Gallery banner) in 2014, and has decided to give exhibitions longer running time this year, as well as installing a fresh LED track-lighting system.
The first photographer to benefit from the gallery’s more relaxed schedule is Auckland artist Chris Corson-Scott, whose large-format colour landscapes will fill four rooms in the Courtenay Place gallery from February 14 to April 2.
Corson-Scott’s exemplary prints, created with an eight by 10-inch camera, have catapulted the young artist to the forefront of the New Zealand contemporary photographic art scene, and exhibited in many of Auckland’s prominent art spaces (including the Auckland Art Gallery) as well as overseas.
Photospace’s 2015 schedule will be exciting despite the less hectic pace. Artists also to exhibit this year include Mark Beehre, Sally Griffin (showing photos from the 1970s featuring prominent artists and political figures), Hans Weston, Stephen LaPlante, Alex Efimoff, Nathalie Daoust (a French-Canadian artist with images from North Korea), as well as two curated group exhibitions featuring Auckland photographers and other artists. Photospace cornerstone exhibitor Andrew Ross rounds out the year.
