Expat returns for residency
An expatriate New Zealand photographer living in Berlin returns home this year to take up artistic residency at Auckland’s Waitawa Regional Park.
Conor Clarke has been selected for the 2015 edition of the Auckland Council’s Artist in Residence programme, which each year sees an artist living in one of the region’s parks for an eight-week period to produce a new body of work.
Clarke, who was born and raised in South Auckland, says she is thrilled to have the chance to reconnect with the area, and to work in a space so different from her apartment in Berlin.
“My residency work will be photos of reimagined scenes based on aspects of the park,” she says. “It will be in the grey area between fiction and reality, photography and collage.”
In her recent work she has used an analogue camera to create images that imbue grimy industrial landscapes with a strange beauty, a theme she will continue to explore during her residency from October to December.
The resultant work will be shared with the public in future exhibitions, both here and in Germany.
