Zeiss Otus range of lenses
Very few lenses have received a response linked to the level of excitement that accompanies the name ‘Otus’. But with over 125 years of optical and mechanical excellence from Zeiss, the hype associated with its announcement was well founded. To add credence to the expensive price tag — approximately double that of prime lenses at equivalent focal lengths — the Zeiss Otus range of lenses was created with one single thought in mind: to achieve uncompromising image quality.
In this pursuit to achieve perfection in optical performance with the Otus range, Zeiss set the new benchmark for prime lenses. Comprising 28mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.4, and 85mm f/1.4 focal lengths, and available in both Canon and Nikon mount, the three Otus lenses stand out for their superb image quality. Capable of reproducing the finest details and textures in stunning clarity, the 28mm boasts a complex Distagon design, while the 55mm and 85mm feature Zeiss’s famous symmetrical Planar — allowing for a wide maximum aperture of f/1.4, and ensuring excellent performance in low light. With this stellar prime line-up, special glass elements provide apochromatic corrections against unwanted optical artifacts, while a very flat plane of focus ensures sharpness across the entire image plane, including all four extreme full-frame corners.
As manual-focus lenses, the Otus range offers photographers the control necessary for composed portrait and product shots, as well as the freedom to compose their subjects, without a moment lost to any question of quality.
