The Hamar of Ethiopia visit Auckland

-

The last time we spoke with Guy Needham, he was exhibiting his Shades of Otara photographs. This time, Needham has been to Ethiopia and is presenting his images from his time away in his exhibition The Hamar of Ethiopia, which will be on display at Auckland’s This That Gallery from August 1 to 31.

Needham spent time in Ethiopia’s Lower Valley of the Omo, and worked with a non-governmental organization to document the lifestyle of the Hamar tribe. His exhibition provides an insight into the everyday life of one of Africa’s last traditional tribes.

“I was based at a village called Shele, and every market day I would go into the nearest town (a 17km walk away) and photograph the Hamar I met. This exhibition is all about them,” Needham explained.

His series of portraits features individual members of the tribe standing in front of brightly coloured walls and showcases the essence of what life is like as part of the Hamar tribe.
