Pastures new

- Lara Wyatt

It’s been nearly a year and a half since I took over the role of editor of

The Photographer’s Mail, and it was a major highlight very early on in my career journey. It was incredibly daunting going in with very little photography knowledge, and interviewing successful photographers about what they were working on, and what they were shooting with, but, if I ever asked a ridiculously stupid question, nobody ever pointed it out — everyone I have worked with has been very receptive to discussing their work with The Photographer’s Mail, and, ultimately, sharing it with those within the professional photographic community. And it’s made my time at the helm very enjoyable and rewarding. I’ve come away from every interview inspired and motivated to work even harder for the magazine — even when I’ve been dealing with words, while those I’ve interviewed have been dealing with images, there have always been pearls of wisdom that have been shared with me that I’ve managed to find a way to apply to whatever I’ve been working on. The positivity and excitement within the photographic world are things to be reckoned with, that’s for sure.

Although I still haven’t picked up a camera myself, apart from my trusty phone, I do find myself recognizing people’s works in galleries, on billboards, and in store windows, and I still get pangs of excitement when I recall — to whoever is with me at the time — that I interviewed the photographer who created the beautiful images we are admiring. I don’t think that will ever get old, and I’ll probably continue to point out work by those I’ve met and talked to to my future kids and grandkids — yes, you’ve all had that much of an impact on me!

And with that, I’d like to pass the reins over to Rebecca Frogley, who will be managing the day-to-day

The Photographer’s Mail duties, bringing you all the latest news and information within the professional photography community. If you have any updates for her or want her to know what you’ve been working on, whether it’s a personal project or an assigned project, fire it through to editor@photographersmail.co.nz. However, I won’t be all that far away — I’ll still be in the wings as the managing editor of The Photographer’s Mail, so I’ll still get to see all the amazing work you’re all doing.

Finally, thank you to everyone I have interviewed, bounced ideas off, and enlisted to contribute to our magazine, as well as to everyone who’s given me handy tips and tricks along the way — I can’t wait to see what you all do next!
