The Matakohe Kauri Mu­seum, which opened on 29 Jan­uary in 1962, stands on a small knoll over­look­ing green pas­ture, an his­toric to­tara house, and then out to the Kaipara Har­bour.

As the last rem­nants of mist un­coil from the placid wa­ters a trusty band of vol­un­teers makes its way to the rear shed door. It is Wed­nes­day: vol­un­teer day.
