The printing process on the Albion press has remained largely unchanged since the late 1430s when Johannes Gutenberg introduced his revolutionary system of printing that allowed the mass production of books. Tara uses the Albion particularly when he is working on jobs with large pointsize fonts. He demonstrates the basic steps in these photos.
1 Mixing the ink with the pallet knife
2 Hand inking the printing block
5 Winding the block under the press
3 Placing the paper on the block of type, ensuring that it is correctly positioned so everything lines up
4 Closing the tympan
7 Lifting the printed sheet
