The Sportsman Weekend - - Doomben A Detailed Formguide - WITH GREG SPLETTER

It’s an enormous meeting at Doomben tomorrow as we head towards Magic Millions time and while there’s plenty at big odds for us later in the day, my thoughts are close to top of betting the first few races. It’s been tough to jag the track condition this far out in recent times but I’m hoping the rain (if any) is light enough to let track dry down to a good-4. The first looks a race in two, and I was very impressed with the win of FULLAZABOOT here back in October. Never looked like losing over the 1110m and while the heavy-10 may have flatter him, there’s every chance he’ll go better on top of the ground. His mum was a nice type and a stakeswinner in Melbourne at two, I’d have him at least equal fave here so we’re getting a touch of value at $3.30. BLUE BOOK is the danger and unbeaten himself in two starts here. Beat a small field at his latest win is up to 59kg but big weights don’t deter me as much with juveniles. GRIM REAPER has chased Blue Book home at both of his outings but has been convincingly beaten on both occasions. Standout third pick but he looks to be a couple of lengths behind the top two.

I AM IMPINGE will need a couple to stay at home to secure run here but is undoubtedly the testing material if he makes cut. Handy enough effort first-up under 58kg at the Sunshine Coast when he ran home into second spot over 1200m down at class one level, though was a disappointment to those who took the $1.30. His form when last in work was more than enough to account for these, including consecutive placings against the likes of Snitz, Cellargirl and Whypeeo. He hasn’t drawn well at all but this is a typical R70 with no depth and not whole lot in the way of class, and we’re getting a really good shy at the stumps at $5.50. BENFICA PRINCESS has solid form for this including a tidy first-up win in a class three out of town. She was stakes-placed in the Princess Stakes at the beginning of the winter carnival so she’s no slouch, and I’d be inclined to back both of them at good value. MEHMETO has come up the $4.80 fave after a nice run behind Revaldor here two weeks ago in this grade. His form up at class three level in town earlier in spring was handy and he is certainly some hope, though little value at the price.

There wasn’t much between MAGNUFIGHTER and BOOM BOOM EPIC here two weeks ago over 1350m and I don’t expect there will be much separating them again tomorrow stepping up to the mile. Magnufighter made two from two this prep sneaking along fence after getting balked for a run at the top of the straight. He was stakes-placed here last prep before running a fair race at Group One level over mile and the extra trip here will suit. Over odds at $3.70 and I’d have them much closer in betting. BOOM BOOM EPIC did cover extra ground the other day but they didn’t go hard, and he had every chance to beat winner. Not sure that he’ll be quite as competitive over a longer trip tomorrow and is quite layable at $2.60. I thought NASHVILLE SKYLINE might be a bit longer than $8.50 but she can run cheeky race. Nice enough win first-up at home before flashing home a little too late over 1600m a the Sunshine Coast. Yet to produce results of the top two but will be running on strongly.

For something completely different we have a class two plate here and while there’s no depth to the race a couple have snuck in that are head shoulders above rest. CHAMALU hasn’t had much luck at his last two, getting held up behind Spring Tycoon here two runs ago before stepping up to this trip and running out of luck again in a pretty strong race won by Monasterio. Won two his first three starts, split by a decent enough run in the G1 Golden Rose and I’ve got no complaints here at the $2.60. Matt Dunn has been sending REALING south this prep trying to plunder more easy money from the TAB Highway withdrawal facility and hasn’t been far off the mark. Rocketed to the line first-up under a big weight before sitting closer over the longer journey and working home okay. I’m not usually a big fan of TAB Highway form against genuine city class but I know this bloke from his 3yo season and he does have plenty of ability when right. One of these two will win. DUKE OF CHRISTOPHE made up some ground in Monasterio’s race a fortnight ago and would probably be over the line in this with the two favourites out. Looks a solid third pick and at $17 is worth playing around with across the exotics.

Our first runner for the day at big odds in HIGH COST, though he’s hardly a speccy and is racing in great touch. Ran an absolute cracker in far superior grade here last time when beaten just a half length by Khalama and Trubia in blanket finish at Bm90 level. That was coming off a strong win at Ipswich carrying 59.5kg and he has drawn a better gate tomorrow. Form before let-up in October was sound against the likes of Helarocity and Impregnable and we can get set here in an 0MW at $21. No good thing, but he is crazy overs. IRON GEORGE has been a model of consistency since transferring to Ben Currie at the beginning the season and comes here off an easy win at Toowoomba last month. His previous three starts were all against stronger company and while he has drawn awkwardly he does get some weight relief for Michael Murphy. Each way hope at $8.50. PLUCKY GIRL isn’t quite the value of the top pick at just $7.00 but she did score a very easy win at Ipswich last time and it followed a good run in a weak class six won by Manaya. It doesn’t get much worse than gate 22 but with some luck J Byrne can put her in the finish somewhere.

Pretty keen here on KIRINI who’s looking for back to back victories after a very strong Bm80 win here two weeks ago over 2200m. Ran a cheeky race in the Qld Oaks behind Egg Tart when last in work so she has some staying talent and at only her fourth run back I’m looking for further improvement. Drops down to 52.5kg under the set weight conditions and is a great bet at $4.60 with the services of Mark du Plessis. MONASTERIO chalked up his first victory on top the ground last start with a good effort to beat Don’t Doubt Da Wife over 1630m. He’ll be stripping fitter for three runs back and while I would much prefer him with some give in the ground, he still rates a hope here down at 54.5kg. SHEZA LILY has won five of her last six starts including a seven length demolition of class four field at the Gold Coast two runs ago before following up with another easy conversion in a Bm75 at the Sunny Coast. This is much tougher but she is a real winner and I do think this formline will hold up over the summer period across the staying events, there’s plenty of depth to field.

Very happy to take the $4.20 about ZUMBELINA here up from Sydney and it’s the Waller team’s best chance for day. Strong winner at Rosehill two runs back over 1200m then didn’t pull up well when a handy enough run in behind Invinzabeel carrying 58.5kg. She is well up to this and from the good gate will be right in finish. OUR BEEBEE isn’t much of a price at $4.60 but she did run out her skin on an unsuitably dry track here in the Ubet Classic. Grows a leg the wet and if the rain comes aplenty I’d probably flip these two selections, though she still has to rate a hope on her last run even on top of the ground. NOTONYOURLIFE put spanner in the works firstup when a blowout winner at $41 but she does improve off a run and should get dry track here which needs to show her best. Far more modest value at the $8.00 but is in the mix.

This is a trap race for me regardless of how I treat this favourite, but at the odds I’m going to jump back onto TOO GOOD TO REFUSE who finished off well third-up in the Recognition Stakes to end up just out of a place. He loves it here over this trip and I can see Dwayne Dunn bringing him down the outside late with a big run. Whether it will be enough to run favourite remains be seen, but at $10 I’m on each way. I took CRACK ME UP last time stepping up to this level and he got the better of me with a strong length and a quarter win at the 1350m. Chalked up consecutive mile wins just prior to the spell but he is up to 56.5kg tomorrow and at $2.35 I have to steer clear again, though acknowledge he is the one to beat. SIR MOMENTS overraced last start and was way out of place on the speed. First-up run was encouraging he will be running home late with my top pick.

I’m a big fan of the 1LY’s but they don’t program many of them up here these days. At big odds I’m going to give my old mate LONDEHERO a chance to resume with a barnstorming run down the middle of the track at a massive $34. He is very good horse fresh, and first-up last prep ran decent race behind the flying Pinch River over 1110m. What I like about him here is that Matt Dunn is sending straight to 1350m on fresh legs and gives him a real chance to produce one of his form spikes roll this lot. Craig Newitt will have him out the back and wait for one tilt at them in the straight, let’s hope he can bring it home us. I’m not a fan of MANAYA at all and while I was wrong about her two runs back, favourite backers did their money cold either side of that win. She’s again tomorrow and while I’d probably recommend a spot for her in the quaddie, she is poor betting proposition. MARKSFIELD is an old warhorse who can push forward here from the awkward gate and race handy. His first-up run was just okay, but he does like the trip with only 51kg after the claim will have a kick on straightening. Worth including in all your multiples at the $31.
