NEWNHAM’S YOUNGSTER LOOKS A STAR

The Sportsman Weekend - - News - SHAYNE O’CASS

MARK Newnham, trainer of Epsom fancy Lanicato, kicks off the most important day of his training career with the very real prospect of saddling up the Breeders’ Plate winner.

Newnham’s flashy Star Witness replica, Exceed The Stars, was subject to immediate and substantial interest when TAB markets for the 112-year-old two-year-old feature opened earlier in the week.

Exceed The Stars, a $220,000 Magic Millions purchase, was an easy trial winner at Randwick on August 28 before his narrow second win at the official two-year-old trials on the Kensington track 12-days ago.

“He was up and going early so we gave him that early trial which gave us a bit of breathing space to decide whether we wanted to trial again or go straight into the Breeders’ Plate,” Newnham said.

“He did well in between so he trialled again and I thought showed good improvement between the two trials.

“The encouraging part (about his second trial) was that they spaced the rest, it about 6-len to the third horse and the time was clearly superior to rest of the trials on the day.

“Tommy (Berry) rode plenty of horses that day and was keen to stick with him and Tommy’s got a very good record in the two-year-old races so it’s to have him on.

“Exceed The Stars has got plenty of natural speed too which is what you want at this time of the year. He’s not short on talent,” he added.
