Masculino to go one better

The Sportsman Weekend - - Flemington Preview - WITH TONY THOMAS

RACE 1:

On the strength of recent jumpouts, it’s hard to go past 6. MICROPHONE. He easily won his heat down the straight last week, clocking fastest time of the day in winning by a space and looking to have something in hand. Well-bred Exceed And Excel who has the blinkers on, which he wore in the trial. Have to be with him. Stablemate 1. AUXIN could be

main danger. He was given a soft time in his jumpout but did impress with how he hit the line over the last 100m under his own steam. Showed enough to be in

firing line here. 11. PRETTY BRAZEN has also shown talent at the jumpouts and is by boom sire Brazen Beau, while 4. CASSIUS is bred to be smart and was scratched from Geelong yesterday to be saved for this.

RACE 2:

Prepared to gamble on 8. ANGEL LASS. Couldn’t have been more impressive in leading all the way for a very easy win at Bairnsdale last start and her sectionals were the best of the day. She chased home smart My Pendant (beating Sora) at Sandown and then favourite behind Sora the form has stacked up in race, with second placegetter Plenty winning on Wednesday at Caulfield. She’ll give this a shake. 2. JAY JAY D’AR has no luck behind Embrace Me at the Valley last start and was finishing better than anything else Sandown before that. Comes in with 1kg under the limit after the claim and will be storming home. Liked way 4. BOLD ARIAL won at Echuca last start and should have finished closer in that Embrace Me race before that. Definite chance. 1. FIRST DIAMOND can improve after being wide throughout behind Embrace Me. Has a win over Behemoth to her credit.

RACE 3:

Going to stick with 4. TORGERSEN in a tricky race where there is not much speed on. Thought he did well at Caulfield on Boxing Day when chasing home So Si Bon in what developed as a sprint up the straight. He just had the slightly tougher run whereas So Si Bon had all the favours. Know he meets that horse worse at the weights but he has the blinkers back on and is in peak form. 3. SO SI BON broke through for that overdue win last time and he could go on with the job here. He has had his quirks, which makes me think he may not be an apprentice’s horse. Still, can’t be left out. 5. SILENTZ rises in class but drops a lot in weight on the back of his tough Caulfield win last start. Holding his form well and drawn to get the run of the race. 6. GUIZOT bolted in at Warrnambool last start and has placed only two tries this course and distance but I have some query on the depth of the opposition he beat last time.

RACE 4:

4. KAPLUMPICH is on the quick back up after battling behind Bold Missile at Caulfield last week. Was dropping back in distance and looks better off out to 1400m again on the strength of a third to Phoneme and Social Spin two starts back. Drawn to sit off the speed gets his chance here. 5. SYMPHONETTE is having her first try at this distance but looks as though she’ll welcome it. Liked the way she hit the line behind Embrace Me at Valley when probably not suited by the tighter track. It took the smart Star Fall to lower her colours at Pakenham before that. Rates highly here. 2. O’TAUTO is promising and did make up good ground here last start. Not beaten far over this course and distance before that. Drawn perfectly. 3. ROBE DE FETE beat a handy one in Hawkshot at Sandown last start and can figure here.

RACE 5:

3. MASCULINO won’t be any fancy price but he does look one of the better bets of the day. Too good for Kentucky Breeze and Etymology (since won twice) at this track before being run down by the handy Al Galayel at the Valley two weeks ago. Convinced he’s a better horse at this course and probably at his best at this trip too. With the claim, he comes in on limit weight, drawn to stay out of trouble and may just be too good for them. The danger could be 7. SECOND BULLET, who invariably saves his best for this course and distance. Liked the way he finished off behind Mahamedeis at Werribee last time and another one who is ideally suited on the limit weight. 2. BEAUTY WAY meets Masculino worse at weights after being safely held by that horse at the Valley last start. But he also looks more at home on this big track. 1. AGE OF FIRE boxed on well at Caulfield on Boxing Day in a glimpse he may be finding his best.

RACE 6:

I like 8. REMEMBER THE NAME, who is all the better for a fighting first-up third to Flying Krupt at Caulfield. Second-up winner over this course and distance when last in work, beating home the handy Mintha. Likes this distance and two runs at track have been first rate. Drawn to get the run of the race and meets Flying Krupt slightly better at weights. 3. NAANTALI is ready to strike top form after two runs this time in. Back to mares grade here after a fourth Social Spin on New Year’s Day and has won this course distance. 6. AMORTENTIA was a little unlucky behind Twitchy Frank when resuming and is second-up winner. Has no weight on her back after the claim. 2. FLYING KRUPT is in cracking form and has to be included again.

RACE 7:

Hard to go past 7. ORDER OF COMMAND, who has come back racing in slashing form with two wins down the straight here, both emphatic fashion. Loved the way he picked up to beat a smart one in Demolition last start. Even better suited by extra 100m and drops 3kg in this tougher grade. The one to beat. Will have a something each-way on 9. CHAUFFEUR, who has always shown stack of ability. Having first start for the Weir stable and bound to be running on strongly. 8. PREZADO was good winning at Pakenham and then boxed on okay behind Order Of Command here. Also drops in weight and don’t forget his career highlight was chasing gome Nature Strip here. 4. INVINCIBLE AL has been placed three of four this course and distance and bound to be charging home.

RACE 8:

Going with 4. CABEZA DE VACA in a tough race. Drawn to get the favours on speed, where he loves to be. Last two first-up runs have resulted in a win at Randwick leading all the way and then last campaign when only just over 3 lengths from Winx in G1 rade at Randwick. Has had two good trials in Sydney to ready him for this. Go well. 12. MANOLO BLAHNIQ went Listed grade last start and did have the favours in the run but liked way he chased hard behind Native Soldier. He can test these. 7. COOL CHAP was only 3 lengths off Happy Clapper in the Doncaster Mile last year and does have a touch of class about him. His recent jumpout was good in fast time. 1. CHAMOIS ROAD has plenty of weight and an awkward draw but this his pet track and distance and is racing well.

RACE 9:

5. I AM SOMEONE picks himself here. Simply gave nothing else a chance in winning at Bendigo last start. Don’t forget he chased home Nature Strip in very slick time down the straight back in June and easily beat home Order Of Command. Always shown a stack of ability and will be hard to stop here. Watch for a big run from 3. WIND FORCE. He had a tough run outside the leader at Mornington last start and forced to go sooner than he liked before battling on behind Rossman. Second placegetter It’s A Shame Billy was third to I Am Someone before that, so the form ties in.

17. TBILISI is better off with the extra 100m here and can run well. 8. VAINSTREAM is ready to show his best.

Masculino.
