The Sportsman Weekend - - Karaka 2019 -

PAUL Gallen is one of the toughest men to have ever played rugby league and can floor an opponent with one punch in the boxing ring. The Kangaroo and former NSW Blues State of Origin captain can now add racehorse owner to his CV, thanks to David Ellis. Gallen is in two of Te Akau’s most exciting prospects in the aptly named Te Akau Shark and classically bred three-year-old You’re Welcome. Te Akau Shark, a $230,000 Karaka Ready to Run purchase by Ellis, has won five timess including a dazzling six-length win in the Group 2 Coupland’s Mile at Riccarton. The son of Rip Van Winkle is being looked at as a potential candidate for the inaugural $5 million All Star Mile at Flemington on March 16 and/or the Doncaster Mile April 6. You’re Welcome, another of Ellis’ Ready to Run recruits, is bred to win a Derby being by Camelot who won the Epsom/Irish Derby double. ‘’I know what an icon Paul is, he is quite incredible,’’ Ellis said. “I would love to have him as a racehorse because of his determination. You’d keep racing him until he was 12.’’
